Studio Policy/ Calendar of Events/ Covid 19 Policy

Policies Regarding Lessons
  • Please keep in mind that this lesson time has been reserved for you throughout the year.  I will always do my best to reschedule lessons missed due to illness or family emergencies.
  • I require 24 hours' notice for cancelled lessons.  I don't give  refunds or make-up lessons for no-shows or late notice cancellations, except in the case of bona fide emergencies or unexpected illness.
  • No lessons are given on statutory holidays or CMSD holidays.  Please see the Calendar of Events for details. Lessons will be given on non-instructional days (NIDS).
  • If a student is "no show" three times in the school year (September through June) they will be dropped from my teaching roster.  "No show" means missing a lesson without giving me prior notice.
  • Post-dated cheques are the preferred method of payment, dated on the first of each month for October through June. These are due on the first lesson of the year. You can also pay by the 3-month term, or by the year.
  • Tuition is based on equalized payments.  The payment for each month is the same, regardless of the number of lessons in the month.
  • If I cancel a lesson, we'll either reschedule it at a mutually convenient time or I will give you a refund.
  • I require 30 days' notice for termination of lessons. At the last lesson, I will return any outstanding postdated cheques.
  • I reserve the right to suspend students for non-payment of tuition fees or inappropriate conduct.

Practice Requirements and Expectations
Regular practice is critically important in gaining competence on an instrument.  During your lesson, we'll develop a plan about how you should practice each piece.

Students should practice a minimum of 5 days a week for at least the length of their lesson. If you have a 30-minute lesson, you should aim to practice at least 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week.  Beginning guitar students should gradually work up to this level, starting at about 15 minutes per day.

Completing Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Requirements

  • 45 minute lessons are required at the RCM Levels 5 to 8 level.
  • 60 minute lessons are required for Levels 9 through ARCT.
  • I strongly recommend theory lessons after the completion of Level 4.
To receive a certificate or school credit for RCM Level 5 and higher,  students must successfully complete the RCM theory co-requisites.

Studio Policy Regarding Covid-19 Precautions

Students can choose to have face-to-face lessons, or remote lessons via Zoom.

Face to Face lessons:

We will be distanced 2 meters apart, wearing masks. We will be separated by a plastic barrier. I will sanitize my hands and all surfaces before each lesson (piano keyboard, door handles, light switch, table, etc.).

Students will sanitize their hands before the lesson starts. I will supply hand sanitizer.

Please arrive and leave on time, not early or late.  Scheduling includes 15 minutes for sanitizing and hand washing. I am asking that only one student, or student with parent, be in the studio at a time. Please check that the previous student has left before coming in.

Please do not bring food or drink into the studio.

Please stay home if you are sick. Any student who shows signs of COVID-19 symptoms, has been exposed to COVID, or who has been asked to self-isolate by Northern Health must not attend a face-to-face lesson

Please bring to each lesson:

·   Face mask. This is mandatory.

·   Books, including notebook for me to write in. I cannot supply books if you forget yours.

·   Pencil or pen so you can write in your notebook. Alternatively, if you bring a 3-ring binder, I can write lesson notes to be put into the binder.

Zoom lessons

·   Please have Zoom downloaded, be familiar with how to use it, and be ready at your computer or device at the appointed time. We can do a trial run if you wish.

Have your computer or device set up so that I have a good view of both hands, with decent lighting. You may need to experiment a bit before the lesson starts.

Be sure that you’re in a quiet place with no background noise.

It’s helpful, but not essential, to wear good quality headphones that have a built-in microphone—this enhances the sound quality for both of us.

Have all materials ready before you log in—pencil and pen, books, notebook, etc. For guitar students, please make sure your guitar is tuned. Set up your music stand and footstool (if needed) ahead of time.

For small children, a parent or other adult helper should be present for the lesson to write notes, help find pages in the book, etc.

I’ll email or text lesson notes after each lesson.  Please be sure you download and read these, and refer to them when practicing.
